The Memphis Bop Club was born out of frustration; the frustration which Memphis bop lovers felt when Chevy's closed in early 1986 and no other nightclub proprietors responded to our need.
On April 3, 1987 the first meeting of a handful of people was held. These
people were committed to the idea of possibly forming our own "Bop Club". These
individuals were Tom Polzin, Glenda Martin, Bunny Lee Wilhelm and
the late Pete Wade, Lin Quint and John Davis. We committed our time and energies to pushing
the idea of "THE MEMPHIS BOP CLUB".
We prepared an application form and took them to Temptations; the only nightclub in town supporting 50's & 60's music at the time. We quickly learned it was a good idea. The response was overwhelming. Within the first few weeks, the club had grown to 50, then 75, then 100 people.
The first dance lessons were given to students in our home. Our first monthly parties were held in Lin Quint's clubhouse. However, we soon had to move to a larger location because we were too big for the Clubhouse.
Now, in our 25th year, we are proud to be able to say we were the "first" in
Memphis and remain successful. We will always be successful, as long as we,
as members, support it and remain active.
